When I first watched a trailer for The Nun, I’ll admit that it did succeed in creeping me out a bit. After I saw it on the big screen, I was bitterly disappointed.
Spin-off movies are a dime a dozen in Hollywood these days, and The Conjuring 2 isn’t spared from this moneymaking trend. The Nun happens to be a spin-off of that 2016 effort, which itself had big shoes to fill following the critical acclaim of its James Wan-helmed predecessor.
That Wan, who also directed 2004’s terrifying sleeper hit Saw, is credited as producer of this borderline B-movie quickly conjured thought bubbles floating above my head; and each and every one was filled with question marks.
What happened to the finesse that was on display in The Conjuring? How could a filmmaker of his caliber agree to this? Why am I even watching it?
Demián Bichir, Taissa Farmiga, and Jonas Bloquet do their damnedest to lead the cast of intrepid characters, but struggle to find their footing on a virtually non-existent storyline.
What we do know for sure is that the protagonists are sent to Southeastern Europe by the Vatican to uncover an unholy secret with an ominous past. Sadly, what ensues is a series of trite and predictable sequences that rely too heavily on shock tactics.
Whether or not The Nun and its filmmakers made a vow to abstain from the creativity of its sister films, all it did was prove that it is a devout believer in jump scares. And it didn’t even have a prayer of succeeding in that department.
